What is mining adit?

A mining adit is a horizontal passage or tunnel that is dug into the side of a hill, mountain or cliff for the purpose of gaining access to mineral or metal deposits below ground. Adits are typically used in underground mining operations and are created using manual labour or modern drilling techniques. They can be made of wood, concrete or steel. Adits are often used as an entrance to a mine and provide a safe and secure way for miners to enter and exit the mine. They also serve as ventilation channels, allowing fresh air to circulate within the mine and removing toxic gases and dust particles. Some adits are large enough to accommodate vehicles and machinery used in mining operations. Adits can also be used for drainage purposes, allowing water to flow out of the mine into a nearby stream or river.
